Choose a workout sync path

By WorkoutPort · Reviewed

Start with the recording source and the exact upload state. A missing activity, a delayed upload and a missing map need different checks.

The available paths

Recent Apple Workout recordings: check native Health import

Strava’s native Health connection can import workouts recorded with Apple’s Workout app within the past 30 days. It excludes workouts another company’s app saved to Health. In Strava, open You → settings → Manage Apps and Devices → Health. Review Workouts and Routes access, then use the listed Import action or enable Automatic Uploads when that scope fits.

You can use the native option without WorkoutPort. Before switching upload paths, check the intended Strava athlete and whether the session already exists.

Selected Health workouts: use an explicit rule

WorkoutPort can select available Health workouts by sport, distance, dates, source and other rule conditions. Load the range in Workouts, connect the intended athlete in Rules, review one rule’s matching preview, then enable Auto-sync eligible workouts. New rules start from today; change that cutoff deliberately for older sessions.

Any enabled rule can make a workout eligible, so review the complete list. Background sync depends on Health delivery, iOS scheduling and Strava processing. A route-required rule waits for a readable route.

Older or third-party Health workouts: inspect one session first

These sessions are outside Strava’s native Apple Workout import scope. First check the recording app’s own Strava connection or original-file export. If the workout is available in Apple Health, WorkoutPort can load the relevant date range and show its source, route and upload state. Connect Strava and upload one inspected workout from Workouts before considering a larger batch.

A summary does not prove that all GPS or sensor samples are readable. An empty Health result does not prove deletion or a specific permission cause. Do not reconstruct missing measurements.

A Strava watch recording: check Unsynced in the recording app

This is a watch-to-Strava transfer, not an Apple Workout import. In the Strava Apple Watch app, inspect Settings → Unsynced and the phone or network connection. Use the saved session’s sync action once when appropriate, then check the destination before adding another uploader.

An original workout file: preserve it and preview the destination

Strava accepts supported FIT, GPX and TCX activity files. Its web file-upload option is one direct path. WorkoutPort also opens these files from Workouts → Import or the iOS share sheet, previews the available data, and can send the original file to Strava without importing it into Apple Health. Health import is a separate, confirmed write action.

Keep the original bytes. Timestamps and readable data matter; changing the filename or converting formats cannot restore GPS or sensor fields that are absent. Processing acceptance is separate from a completed activity.

An accepted or uncertain upload: verify before sending another copy

An accepted upload can still be processing. Use the exact workout’s Check status or recovery action and inspect the intended Strava account. If a timeout left the earlier submission uncertain, preserve that state and verify the destination. A new filename or another automatic sync path is not evidence that a repeat is safe.

A possible duplicate: compare the exact sessions

Check the connected athlete, date, time, recording source and available identifiers. A similar title alone cannot establish a match. WorkoutPort skips known matches and holds uncertain ones for review. Resolve the existing activity and overlapping integrations before attempting another upload.

Check the destination and recovery state

An existing activity without a map: inspect the route separately

Check readable, timestamped coordinates in the original recording or export. Then check Strava’s Indoor tag and map visibility settings. A successful upload response does not establish that a map was transferred or displayed. Pending or failed route reads must not be treated as proof that the source had no route.

Keep the original recording and file while investigating. Do not delete and re-upload an activity merely because its map is hidden.

Check the recording date before choosing native import

Find the session in the recording app or Apple Fitness. Strava’s native Apple Workout import covers the past 30 days. Once the date and source are known, use the recent native path or inspect the older Health session or original file.

Keep one upload path for the same workouts

Review overlapping automatic connections before enabling another. WorkoutPort’s Health viewing, sync and file exports are free; optional Pro adds creative sharing and personalization. A transfer sends selected data to the destination you choose. Read the privacy details and keep personal files and route screenshots out of public support posts.
