Apple Watch workouts not syncing to Strava

By WorkoutPort · Reviewed

Start by checking which app recorded the workout. An activity saved by Apple Workout, one recorded in Strava on the watch, and a workout written to Health by another app follow different upload paths.

Find the workout before changing the connection

Open the recording app or Apple Fitness and locate the session. Check its date, sport and source. Then look in the destination Strava account for an activity at the same time, including a differently named or private activity.

A workout visible in Apple Fitness is useful evidence that a record exists. It does not, by itself, tell you which app saved it or whether another app can read all its samples. Avoid repeated uploads while you are identifying the source.

If Apple’s Workout app recorded it

Strava’s Apple Health instructions describe the native connection and its current limits. In Strava on your iPhone, open settings from the You tab, then Manage Apps and Devices and Health. Connect Health if needed and review its access.

The native import covers Apple Workout recordings from the past 30 days. A workout saved to Health by another company’s app follows a different case below. A session older than the native window needs a separate historical-workout upload workflow.

For an eligible session listed for import, try its Import action once and wait for the result. Check Strava’s history again before repeating it. If the connection lists an imported activity but you cannot find it, investigate the matching activity and destination account.

Review Health access for Strava in iPhone Settings. Make sure the workout and route access needed by your recording is enabled. The exact menu names can differ with the iOS version. Returning to Strava’s Health connection can help you see whether an eligible session is now listed.

If Strava on the watch recorded it

A session recorded in the Strava watch app is not an Apple Workout import. Check the saved session in that app and its connection to the phone or network.

Strava’s Apple Watch troubleshooting guide includes a Settings → Unsynced view on the watch. Inspect that list and use its manual sync action for the saved session when appropriate. Give the transfer a chance to settle before starting another path.

A delayed watch-to-Strava transfer should be investigated in the recording app. Installing another uploader cannot establish whether the original submission completed.

If another app saved the workout to Health

Strava’s native Health import excludes workouts recorded by other apps. First check whether the original recording app has its own Strava connection or can export the original workout file.

WorkoutPort can read workouts that other apps made available in Apple Health. Open Workouts, grant read access and load the date range. Inspect the session’s source, available route and upload state. A workout that remains absent may need a source-app or Health-access check; an empty result is not proof that the original session was deleted.

If the session is available, connect the intended Strava athlete in Rules. A manual upload from Workouts is separate from background automation. You can test one session before creating rules for future uploads.

Read the upload state before choosing a fix

Use the state of the exact workout to choose the next step.
What you seeWhat to check
Processing on StravaAn upload was accepted for processing. Check status and the destination activity before submitting another copy.
Possible duplicateReview the compared activities and identifiers. Similar titles alone do not establish a match.
Reconnect neededRepair the connection to the intended athlete before uploading.
Missing route or dataInspect available Health data. A route-required transfer may need to wait.
FailedRead the failure and use the offered recovery action. Verify ambiguous earlier submissions first.

When the activity exists but the map is missing

A completed activity without a map is a different problem from an activity that never reached Strava. Check the source route, exported file and destination separately. Look for timestamped coordinates in the source and check the activity’s Indoor tag and map visibility settings before trying another upload.

Keep the original recording and any export while investigating. Reinstalling apps or deleting source records can remove useful evidence without resolving the transfer.

Choose one path for the next workout

Once you know which path worked, keep that path for the same sessions. For example, record with Apple Workout and use either native Health import or a WorkoutPort rule. Review overlapping integrations before enabling automatic uploads.

WorkoutPort sync and file exports are free. If a transfer still needs help, visit support with the visible status and recording app. Keep personal workout files and route screenshots out of public support posts.
